  Theodore Stratelates

  Martyr, Θεόδωρος

  The Holy Great Martyr Theodore Stratelates, the Commander, was a military governor in Asia Minor who suffered for Christ under the emperor Licinius at the beginning of the fourth century. Confessing the Lord openly and overturning the worship of idols, he endured cruel tortures and was beheaded, encouraging the faithful to stand firm.

• Kalliope the Martyr

  Holy Woman, Καλλιόπη

  Saint Kalliope was a Christian maiden of great beauty who, during the persecution under Decius in the third century, refused both marriage to a pagan and the renunciation of her faith. Tradition relates that she was cruelly tortured and finally beheaded.

• Theophanes the New Martyr

  Martyr, Θεοφάνης ο Νεομάρτυς

  Saint Theophanes was a Christian of Constantinople who, tradition relates, as a boy was taken and made a Muslim, but later returned to the Christian faith. When this became known he was tortured and finally executed in 1559, receiving the crown of martyrdom.

• Nicander and Marcian, Martyrs

  Martyr, Νίκανδρος και Μαρκιανός

  Saints Nicander and Marcian were soldiers who refused to sacrifice to idols when the imperial edict was published. Tradition relates that they were beheaded together, Marcian encouraged by his wife who stood by him to the end. They suffered in the early fourth century at Durostorum on the Danube.

• Naukratios, Brother of Basil the Great

  Venerable, Ναυκράτιος

  Saint Naukratios was the second son of Basil the Elder and Saint Emmelia, and a brother of Saints Basil the Great, Gregory of Nyssa and Macrina. Gifted as an orator, he abandoned a worldly career at about twenty-one and withdrew to the family estate in Pontus, where he lived as an ascetic and cared for the poor.

• Paul the Confessor of Kaiouma

  Venerable, Παύλος ο Ομολογητής

  Saint Paul was a monk of the monastery of Kaiouma in Constantinople during the iconoclast persecution. Tradition relates that for his defence of the holy icons he was tortured and burned, and the Church honours him as a confessor.

• Theodore of Rostov

  Hierarch, Θεόδωρος Επίσκοπος Ροστώφ

  Saint Theodore was a Greek by birth who came to Russia with the first missionaries after the baptism of Prince Vladimir and became the first bishop of Rostov in the early eleventh century. He laboured to convert the pagan population of the region and reposed in Suzdal.
