Theophilos the New

Holy Martyr Theophilos the New, a Byzantine commander martyred by the Arabs.

St. Theophilos the New was a commander of the Byzantine forces in Cyprus in the eighth century. Captured by the Arabs, he was held for years in prison and, refusing to deny Christ, was beheaded around 792.

He is commemorated on January 30.

On the New Calendar, Theophilos the New is commemorated on January 30. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on February 12 of the civil calendar.
