  George of Mytilene

  Hierarch, Γεώργιος

  St. George the Confessor was Bishop of Mytilene on the island of Lesbos during the age of iconoclasm. A merciful shepherd known for his almsgiving and ascetic life, he refused to abandon the veneration of the holy icons when the emperors demanded it, and in his old age he was driven from his see into exile, where he ended his days.

• Kalliopios the Martyr

  Martyr, Καλλιόπιος

  Kalliopios was born in Perge in Pamphylia to a devout widow named Theoklia, who raised him in the faith. During the persecution of the early fourth century he confessed Christ at Pompeiopolis in Cilicia and was cruelly tortured.

• Rufinus, Aquilina and the 200 Soldiers of Sinope

  Martyr, Ρουφίνος, Ακυλίνα και οι Διακόσιοι Μάρτυρες

  Rufinus, a deacon, and Aquilina were imprisoned at Sinope on the Black Sea for their faith. Tradition relates that through their prayers and miracles two hundred soldiers of the garrison came to believe in Christ.

• Tikhon of Moscow

  Hierarch, Τύχων Πατριάρχης Μόσχας

  Tikhon was born Vasily Belavin in 1865, the son of a village priest. As a young bishop he headed the Russian mission in North America, founding parishes and seminaries across the continent, before returning to serve as bishop in Yaroslavl and Vilnius.

• Gerasimos the Byzantine

  Venerable, Γεράσιμος ο Βυζάντιος

  Gerasimos came from Constantinople to Mount Athos, where he lived the ascetic life and composed hymns and services for the saints. He is remembered as a man of learning and prayer.

• Daniel of Pereslavl

  Venerable, Δανιήλ ο Θαυματουργός

  Daniel was born in Pereslavl-Zalessky in the fifteenth century and became a monk at the Borovsk monastery under a disciple of Saint Paphnutius. Returning to his native town, he made it his special labour to bury the unclaimed dead and to pray for them.
