George of Mytilene

St. George the Confessor, Bishop of Mytilene.

St. George the Confessor was Bishop of Mytilene on the island of Lesbos during the age of iconoclasm. A merciful shepherd known for his almsgiving and ascetic life, he refused to abandon the veneration of the holy icons when the emperors demanded it, and in his old age he was driven from his see into exile, where he ended his days.

The faithful of Lesbos have honored him from ancient times among their chief intercessors. He is commemorated on April 7.
