  Mocius the Martyr

  Martyr, Μώκιος

  The Holy Hieromartyr Mocius was a priest who suffered for Christ at the beginning of the fourth century, during the persecution of Diocletian. Preaching boldly against the worship of idols, he was arrested and endured many torments, and was finally beheaded at Byzantium, faithful to the end.

  Cyril and Methodios, Enlighteners of the Slavs

  Apostle, Κύριλλος και Μεθόδιος

  Cyril (baptized Constantine) and his elder brother Methodios were born in Thessalonica in the ninth century. Sent by the Emperor and Patriarch Photios to Moravia, they devised an alphabet for the Slavonic language and translated the Scriptures and services, so that the Slavs might worship in their own tongue.

• Founding of Constantinople

  Saint, Εγκαίνια Κωνσταντινουπόλεως

  On May 11 in the year 330 the Emperor Constantine formally dedicated the city of Byzantium as the new capital of the empire, placing it under the protection of the Theotokos. The city became the seat of the Ecumenical Patriarchate and the heart of the Orthodox world.

• Argyrios of Epanomi

  Martyr, Αργύριος ο Επανομίτης

  Argyrios was born in Epanomi near Thessalonica in the late eighteenth century and worked as a tailor in the city. When a Christian who had apostatized was being taken to be judged, Argyrios openly urged him to return to Christ, and was himself arrested.

• Olympia and Euphrosyne of Mytilene

  Holy Woman, Ολυμπία και Ευφροσύνη

  Olympia was born in Constantinople and became a nun on the island of Lesbos, where she was joined by Euphrosyne. Tradition relates that pirates raided their monastery in the thirteenth century and, when the nuns refused to renounce Christ, put Olympia to death with nails.

  Martyr, Διόσκορος ο Νέος

  Dioskoros was a Christian who confessed his faith before the Turkish authorities and, refusing to convert, was put to death, tradition placing his martyrdom at Smyrna. Few details of his life are preserved.
