• Modestos

  Martyr, Μόδεστος

  The Holy Martyr Modestos suffered for Christ in the early centuries of the Church. Of his life the synaxaria preserve little beyond his faithful confession, that he refused to deny the Lord and sealed his witness with his blood.

• Epiphanios of Cyprus

  Hierarch, Επιφάνιος Κύπρου

  Epiphanios was born in Palestine of Jewish parents in the early fourth century and came to Christ as a young man. He became a monk under Saint Hilarion and founded a monastery near Eleutheropolis before being chosen bishop of Salamis in Cyprus in 367.

• Germanos of Constantinople

  Hierarch, Γερμανός Κωνσταντινουπόλεως

  Germanos was born in Constantinople in the seventh century, son of a patrician executed by the emperor. Raised among the clergy of the Great Church, he became Bishop of Cyzicus and in 715 Patriarch of Constantinople.

• Theodore of Kythera

  Venerable, Θεόδωρος ο εν Κυθήροις

  Theodore was born in Koroni in the Peloponnese and, after serving as a cleric, left his family for the ascetic life. He withdrew to the then-deserted island of Kythera, where he lived alone in prayer and hardship.

• John of Wallachia

  Martyr, Ιωάννης ο Βλάχος

  John was born in Oltenia in Wallachia in the seventeenth century and was taken captive by the Turks as a young man. Brought to Constantinople, he was repeatedly pressured to accept Islam and to yield to his captor's immoral demands.

• Pancratius of Rome

  Martyr, Παγκράτιος ο Μάρτυς

  Pancratius was born in Phrygia and brought to Rome as an orphan by his uncle, where both were baptized. During the persecution of Diocletian the boy, only about fourteen years old, refused to sacrifice to the gods and was beheaded on the Via Aurelia around the year 304.

• Hermogenes of Moscow

  Hierarch, Ερμογένης Μόσχας

  Hermogenes was Metropolitan of Kazan before being chosen Patriarch of Moscow in 1606 during the Time of Troubles. When Polish forces occupied Moscow, he refused to endorse the foreign claimant and sent letters calling the Russian people to rise in defense of Orthodoxy.
