New Martyr John of Wallachia, a Romanian youth strangled in Constantinople for refusing Islam.
John was born in Oltenia in Wallachia in the seventeenth century and was taken captive by the Turks as a young man. Brought to Constantinople, he was repeatedly pressured to accept Islam and to yield to his captor's immoral demands.
He refused steadfastly and was hanged in 1662. He is honored by the Romanian and Greek Churches.
