Hieromartyr Hermogenes, Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia.
February 17
St. Hermogenes served as a priest in Kazan, where he witnessed the finding of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, and later became Metropolitan of Kazan and Patriarch of Moscow. During the Time of Troubles he called the Russian people to resist the Polish occupation and refused to sanction a Catholic ruler.
Imprisoned by the invaders in the Kremlin, he died of starvation in 1612, honoured as a martyr for faith and nation.

Hermogenes was Metropolitan of Kazan before being chosen Patriarch of Moscow in 1606 during the Time of Troubles. When Polish forces occupied Moscow, he refused to endorse the foreign claimant and sent letters calling the Russian people to rise in defense of Orthodoxy.
Imprisoned in the Chudov Monastery, he was starved to death in 1612. He was glorified in 1913.
