Theodore the Byzantine

New Martyr Theodore of Neochori in Constantinople, who suffered in Mytilene.

St. Theodore was born in Neochori near Constantinople and as a young man worked in the Sultan's palace, where he was drawn into professing Islam. Repenting bitterly, he confessed Christ openly in Mytilene before the Turkish judge.

He endured imprisonment and torture and was hanged in Mytilene in 1795, where his relics are venerated.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Theodore the Byzantine is commemorated on February 17. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on March 2 (a day earlier in leap years) of the civil calendar.
