  Gurias and Samonas

  Martyr, Γούριας και Σαμωνάς

  The holy confessors Gurias and Samonas were Christians of Edessa in Mesopotamia who suffered for Christ in the persecutions of the early fourth century, enduring imprisonment and torture before being put to death. The deacon Abibus, martyred in the same city some years later, is honored with them.

• Elpidios, Marcellus and Eustochios

  Martyr, Ελπίδιος, Μάρκελλος και Ευστόχιος

  Saint Elpidios was a senator who confessed Christ before Julian the Apostate and was condemned with his companions Marcellus and Eustochios. Tradition relates that they were tortured and finally burned.

• Kyntion of Seleucia

  Hierarch, Κυντίων Σελευκείας

  Saint Kyntion was Bishop of Seleucia and is honoured in the synaxarion for his holy life. Tradition relates that he reposed in peace after governing his see with wisdom.

• Justinian and Theodora

  Saint, Ιουστινιανός και Θεοδώρα

  The Emperor Justinian ruled the Byzantine Empire in the sixth century and is remembered for the building of the Great Church of Hagia Sophia in Constantinople, for his codification of Roman law and for his defence of the Orthodox faith. His wife Theodora was his close counsellor and known for her charity.

• Demetrios of Thrace

  Martyr, Δημήτριος ο Μάρτυς

  Saint Demetrios was a Christian of the village of Dabuda in Thrace. According to the synaxarion he was seized during the persecution of Maximian and, refusing to sacrifice, was beheaded.

• Thomas II of Constantinople

  Hierarch, Θωμάς ο Β' Πατριάρχης

  Saint Thomas II was Patriarch of Constantinople in the seventh century. The synaxarion honours him for his virtue and for governing the Church in peace during a troubled time.
