  Exaltation of the Holy Cross

  Great Feast, Ύψωση Τιμίου Σταυρού

  The Universal Exaltation of the Precious and Life-Giving Cross commemorates the finding of the true Cross of Christ in Jerusalem by St. Helen, mother of St. Constantine the Great, in the fourth century. The Cross was raised aloft by the Patriarch before the people, who bowed down crying out for mercy. The feast also recalls the return of the Cross to Jerusalem from Persian captivity in the seventh century.

• Plakilla the Empress

  Holy Woman, Πλακίλλα

  St. Aelia Flaccilla, called Plakilla in Greek, was the wife of the emperor Theodosius the Great in the fourth century. She was known for her Orthodox faith and her humility, personally serving the sick and the poor in the hospitals of Constantinople, and St. Gregory of Nyssa delivered her funeral oration.

• Fathers of the Sixth Ecumenical Council

  The Sixth Ecumenical Council met in Constantinople in 680 and 681 under the emperor Constantine IV. It condemned the Monothelite heresy, which taught that Christ had only one will, and confirmed that He has two natural wills and two energies, divine and human, without division or confusion.

• Papas the Martyr

  Martyr, Πάπας

  St. Papas was a Christian of Lycaonia in Asia Minor who confessed Christ during the pagan persecutions. Tradition relates that he was forced to walk in shoes fitted with nails and was bound to a tree, where he gave up his soul.

• Makarios the New of Thessaloniki

  Martyr, Μακάριος ο Νέος

  St. Makarios was born in Thessaloniki and became a monk at the monastery of Dionysiou on Mount Athos, a disciple of St. Niphon, Patriarch of Constantinople. With his elder's blessing he went to Thessaloniki, where he openly preached Christ before the Turks and was beheaded in 1527.

• Gerasimos of Sourvia

  Venerable, Γεράσιμος Σουρβιάς

  St. Gerasimos was an ascetic of the seventeenth century who founded the monastery of the Holy Trinity at Sourvia, near Makrinitsa on Mount Pelion in Thessaly, and guided its brotherhood in the monastic life. He reposed in peace.
