Makarios the New of Thessaloniki

New Martyr Makarios of Thessaloniki, monk of Dionysiou and disciple of St. Niphon.

St. Makarios was born in Thessaloniki and became a monk at the monastery of Dionysiou on Mount Athos, a disciple of St. Niphon, Patriarch of Constantinople. With his elder's blessing he went to Thessaloniki, where he openly preached Christ before the Turks and was beheaded in 1527.

Tradition relates that St. Niphon knew of his martyrdom on Athos at the hour it took place. He is commemorated on September 14.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Makarios the New of Thessaloniki is commemorated on September 14. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on September 27 of the civil calendar.
