Plakilla the Empress

Righteous Plakilla, empress, wife of Theodosius the Great.

St. Aelia Flaccilla, called Plakilla in Greek, was the wife of the emperor Theodosius the Great in the fourth century. She was known for her Orthodox faith and her humility, personally serving the sick and the poor in the hospitals of Constantinople, and St. Gregory of Nyssa delivered her funeral oration.

She reposed around 386 and is commemorated on September 14.

On the New Calendar, Plakilla the Empress is commemorated on September 14. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on September 27 of the civil calendar.
