Holy Martyr Agatha of Sicily.
St. Agatha was a virgin martyr of Sicily who suffered for Christ during the persecution of Decius in the third century. Of noble birth, she consecrated herself to the Lord, and when she refused the advances of the pagan governor she was subjected to cruel tortures, which she endured with unshaken faith, dying in prison from her sufferings.
She is greatly venerated in Sicily, above all in Catania, whose people have long sought her protection, and her name is honored throughout the Church, East and West. Her feast is kept on February 5.
