Ammonas the Venerable

Venerable Ammonas, disciple of St. Anthony the Great.

St. Ammonas was a disciple of St. Anthony the Great and, after the saint's repose, guided his disciples in the Egyptian desert. His letters on the spiritual life are preserved, and his sayings appear among those of the Desert Fathers.

He reposed in peace in the fourth century and is commemorated on January 26.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Ammonas the Venerable is commemorated on January 26. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on February 8 of the civil calendar.
