Symeon the Ancient

Venerable Symeon the Ancient, hermit of Mount Amanus.

St. Symeon the Ancient lived as a hermit in a cave on Mount Amanus in Syria in the fourth century, and later founded a monastery there. Tradition relates that wild beasts served him and that he made a pilgrimage to Mount Sinai.

He reposed in peace and is commemorated on January 26.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Symeon the Ancient is commemorated on January 26. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on February 8 of the civil calendar.
