David the Builder

Holy King David IV the Builder of Georgia.

St. David IV, called the Builder, was king of Georgia from 1089 to 1125. He freed his land from the Seljuk Turks, restored the churches and monasteries, founded the Gelati Monastery and academy, and was famed for his humility and his Hymns of Repentance.

He is commemorated on January 26.

On the New Calendar, David the Builder is commemorated on January 26. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on February 8 of the civil calendar.
