Anastasios of Antioch

Patriarch of Antioch.

St. Anastasios was Patriarch of Antioch in the sixth century, a theologian and ascetic who shepherded one of the great sees of the East in a turbulent age. Standing firm for the Orthodox teaching on the Incarnation against imperial pressure, he was driven from his throne and endured long years of exile before being restored to his flock.

The Church honors him among the confessor hierarchs who preferred banishment to the least compromise of the faith. He is commemorated on April 21.
