Januarius of Benevento and his companions

Hieromartyr Januarius, Bishop of Benevento, with the deacons Proculus, Sosius and Faustus and their companions.

Januarius was Bishop of Benevento in Italy at the time of the persecution of Diocletian. Visiting his deacon Sosius in prison, he was himself arrested with the deacons Proculus and Faustus and others.

Tradition relates that they were thrown to the beasts unharmed and were finally beheaded at Pozzuoli in the early fourth century. His relics are venerated at Naples.

On the New Calendar, Januarius of Benevento and his companions is commemorated on April 21. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on May 4 of the civil calendar.
