Holy Martyr Aristides the Philosopher of Athens, apologist of the faith.
St. Aristides was a philosopher of Athens in the second century who, after coming to faith in Christ, addressed a written defense of the Christians to the emperor Hadrian, and tradition relates a second to Antoninus Pius. His Apology, rediscovered in modern times, is among the earliest surviving defenses of the faith, setting Christian worship of the one Creator against the errors of the pagans and describing the pure life of the Christians.
Tradition holds that he sealed his witness with martyrdom at Athens. He is commemorated on September 13, a name day for Aristides and Aristea.
