Meletios Pigas of Alexandria

St. Meletios Pigas, Patriarch of Alexandria, theologian and defender of Orthodoxy.

St. Meletios Pigas was born in Crete in the sixteenth century and studied at Padua before embracing the monastic life. As Patriarch of Alexandria from 1590 he labored to strengthen the Orthodox of Egypt and, as locum tenens of Constantinople, defended the Church against Latin and Protestant pressures and against the new calendar of Rome.

A learned theologian and preacher, he reposed in 1601 and is commemorated on September 13.

On the New Calendar, Meletios Pigas of Alexandria is commemorated on September 13. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on September 26 of the civil calendar.
