Founding of the Church of the Resurrection

Commemoration of the dedication of the Church of the Resurrection, the Holy Sepulchre, in Jerusalem.

After St. Helen found the True Cross, the emperor Constantine the Great built a great church over the tomb of Christ and the hill of Golgotha in Jerusalem. Its dedication was celebrated in the year 335 with a gathering of bishops from across the empire, and the Exaltation of the Cross was appointed for the following day.

The Church keeps the memory of this dedication each year on September 13, on the eve of the Exaltation.

On the New Calendar, Founding of the Church of the Resurrection is commemorated on September 13. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on September 26 of the civil calendar.
