Saint Athanasios I, Patriarch of Constantinople, ascetic and reformer.
Born Alexios in Adrianople around 1230, he became a monk on Mount Athos and in Palestine and lived in great austerity on Mount Ganos. He was made Patriarch of Constantinople in 1289 and again in 1303.
He labored to reform the clergy and feed the poor during the famine and Turkish incursions of his day, and reposed around 1310; his relics were found incorrupt.

On the New Calendar, Athanasios I of Constantinople is commemorated on October 28. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on November 10 of the civil calendar.
