Venerable Barlaam, founder and abbot of the Khutyn monastery near Novgorod.
Venerable Barlaam was born in Novgorod in the twelfth century and, after the death of his parents, became a monk and settled at Khutyn on the Volkhov river, where he founded a monastery dedicated to the Transfiguration.
He was renowned for his ascetic life, his gift of prophecy and his miracles, and is among the most venerated saints of Novgorod.
Feast day
On the New Calendar, Barlaam of Khutyn is commemorated on November 6. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on November 19 of the civil calendar.
