Demetrianos of Kythrea

Saint Demetrianos, Bishop of Kythrea in Cyprus, wonderworker and protector of his flock.

Saint Demetrianos was born in Cyprus in the ninth century. After the death of his young wife he became a monk, and later was consecrated Bishop of Kythrea, where he was known for his gentleness and works of mercy.

Tradition relates that when Arab raiders carried off many of his people, the aged bishop followed them to Baghdad and secured the captives' release. He reposed in peace and is greatly venerated in Cyprus.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Demetrianos of Kythrea is commemorated on November 6. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on November 19 of the civil calendar.
