Paul the Confessor

Patriarch of Constantinople.

St. Paul the Confessor was Archbishop of Constantinople in the fourth century, in the years when the Arian heresy was upheld by the powerful. A firm defender of the Nicene faith, he was driven from his see repeatedly by Arian opponents and finally exiled to a remote place, where he was put to death by those who hated his orthodoxy.

The Church honors him as a confessor who preferred exile and death to the betrayal of the true faith. He is commemorated on November 6.

On the New Calendar, Paul the Confessor is commemorated on November 6. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on November 19 of the civil calendar.
