Barses of Edessa

Saint Barses the Confessor, Bishop of Edessa, exiled by the Arians.

Barses was Bishop of Edessa in the fourth century and a steadfast defender of the Nicene faith. The Arian emperor Valens banished him first to an island and then to Egypt.

He died in exile around 378, and the Church honors him as a confessor.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Barses of Edessa is commemorated on October 15. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on October 28 of the civil calendar.
