Euthymios the New of Thessalonica

Venerable Euthymios the New, ascetic of Mount Athos and founder of the monastery of Peristerai near Thessalonica.

Born Niketas in Galatia in the ninth century, he left his wife and daughter to become a monk on Mount Olympus in Bithynia, and afterward one of the first great ascetics of Mount Athos, living for a time on a pillar near Thessalonica.

He founded the monastery of Peristerai east of Thessalonica and reposed in 898 on the island of Hiera; his relics were brought to Thessalonica.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Euthymios the New of Thessalonica is commemorated on October 15. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on October 28 of the civil calendar.
