Dionysios of Suzdal

Saint Dionysios, Archbishop of Suzdal, founder of the Caves monastery of Nizhny Novgorod.

Dionysios, born near Kiev, founded the Ascension Caves monastery at Nizhny Novgorod and was made Bishop of Suzdal in 1374. He was a friend of Saint Sergius of Radonezh and a zealous opponent of the Strigolnik heresy.

Consecrated Metropolitan of Kiev in Constantinople in 1384, he was detained in Kiev by the prince and reposed there in 1385.

On the New Calendar, Dionysios of Suzdal is commemorated on October 15. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on October 28 of the civil calendar.
