Bede the Venerable

Venerable Bede of Jarrow, monk, teacher and historian of the English Church.

Bede entered the monastery of Wearmouth-Jarrow in Northumbria as a child in the seventh century and spent his whole life there in prayer, study and teaching. His Ecclesiastical History of the English People is the chief source for the early Church in Britain.

He reposed in 735 while dictating a translation of the Gospel of John.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Bede the Venerable is commemorated on May 27. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on June 9 of the civil calendar.
