Julius the Veteran

Holy Martyr Julius the Veteran, a Roman soldier beheaded at Durostorum.

Julius had served twenty-seven years in the Roman army with distinction when, during the persecution of Diocletian, he was denounced as a Christian at Durostorum on the Danube. Refusing to sacrifice, he told the governor that he would not betray the faith he had kept all his life.

He was beheaded around 304.

On the New Calendar, Julius the Veteran is commemorated on May 27. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on June 9 of the civil calendar.
