  John the Russian

  Venerable, Ιωάννης ο Ρώσος

  St. John the Russian was a soldier taken captive during the wars between Russia and the Ottoman Empire early in the eighteenth century, and sold into slavery in Prokopi of Asia Minor. Refusing to abandon his faith, he served his master humbly, living in a stable in prayer and fasting, and came to be revered even by his captors as a man of God.

  Therapon was bishop of Sardis in Lydia and brought many pagans to Christ. During the persecution of Valerian he was arrested, dragged in chains through the cities of Asia and, tradition relates, bound to a dry stake which afterward put forth leaves.

  Julius had served twenty-seven years in the Roman army with distinction when, during the persecution of Diocletian, he was denounced as a Christian at Durostorum on the Danube. Refusing to sacrifice, he told the governor that he would not betray the faith he had kept all his life.

  Bede entered the monastery of Wearmouth-Jarrow in Northumbria as a child in the seventh century and spent his whole life there in prayer, study and teaching. His Ecclesiastical History of the English People is the chief source for the early Church in Britain.

• Therapon of White Lake

  Venerable, Θεράπων της Λευκής Λίμνης

  Therapon was a companion of Saint Kirill of White Lake and, in the late fourteenth century, founded a monastery near Lake Beloe that came to bear his name and was later adorned with the frescoes of Dionisy.
