  Karpos the Apostle

  Apostle, Κάρπος

  The Holy Apostle Karpos was one of the Seventy, a companion and fellow laborer of St. Paul. The Apostle mentions him in his second letter to Timothy, recalling the cloak and books he had left with Karpos at Troas. Tradition holds that he served the Church as a bishop and gave himself wholly to the preaching of the Gospel.

• Alphaeus the Apostle

  Apostle, Αλφαίος ο Απόστολος

  Alphaeus is named in the Gospels as the father of the Apostle James the Less and, according to tradition, of the Evangelist Matthew. Tradition relates that he preached the Gospel and reposed in peace.

• Alexander the Dervish

  Martyr, Αλέξανδρος ο Δερβίσης

  Alexander was born in Thessalonica and as a young man embraced Islam, becoming a wandering dervish. Repenting, he returned to Christ and travelled to Smyrna, where he openly declared his faith before the judge.

• Synesios of Karpasia

  Hierarch, Συνέσιος Καρπασίας

  Synesios was bishop of Karpasia in the north-east of Cyprus, honored on the island as a wonderworker. Tradition places him in the early Christian centuries; his church at Rizokarpaso preserves his memory.

• Averkios the Martyr

  Martyr, Αβέρκιος

  Tradition relates that Averkios and his sister Helen were children of the Apostle Alphaeus. Averkios was tied naked among bees and died of their stings for confessing Christ.

• Helen the Martyr

  Holy Woman, Ελένη η Μάρτυς

  Helen, sister of the martyr Averkios and, according to tradition, daughter of the Apostle Alphaeus, was stoned to death for confessing Christ.

• George the New Martyr of Bulgaria

  Martyr, Γεώργιος ο Νεομάρτυς εκ Βουλγαρίας

  George was a young Bulgarian from Sofia, a goldsmith by trade, who was pressed by the Turks to embrace Islam. Refusing, he confessed Christ and was burned alive.
