George the New Martyr of Bulgaria

New Martyr George of Sofia, burned for refusing Islam.

George was a young Bulgarian from Sofia, a goldsmith by trade, who was pressed by the Turks to embrace Islam. Refusing, he confessed Christ and was burned alive.

He suffered in the early sixteenth century and is honored by the Bulgarian Church.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, George the New Martyr of Bulgaria is commemorated on May 26. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on June 8 of the civil calendar.
