St. John the Russian, Confessor, of Evia.
St. John the Russian was a soldier taken captive during the wars between Russia and the Ottoman Empire early in the eighteenth century, and sold into slavery in Prokopi of Asia Minor. Refusing to abandon his faith, he served his master humbly, living in a stable in prayer and fasting, and came to be revered even by his captors as a man of God.
He reposed in 1730, and his incorrupt relics were brought with the Asia Minor refugees in 1924 to New Prokopi on the island of Evia, where his shrine is one of the great pilgrimage centers of Greece. His feast is May 27.
