Christopher of Dionysiou

Holy New Martyr Christopher, monk of the Dionysiou Monastery, martyred at Adrianople.

Christopher was a monk of the Dionysiou Monastery on Mount Athos. Tradition relates that having in his youth outwardly accepted Islam under pressure, he repented, and after monastic preparation returned to confess Christ before the Ottoman judge.

He was beheaded at Adrianople in 1818 and is honoured among the Athonite new martyrs.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Christopher of Dionysiou is commemorated on April 16. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on April 29 of the civil calendar.
