Michael of Vourla

Holy New Martyr Michael of Vourla, beheaded at Smyrna at the age of eighteen.

Michael was a youth from Vourla near Smyrna who, tradition relates, was tricked by Turks into uttering words of conversion while intoxicated. Coming to himself, he refused to accept Islam and boldly declared that he was a Christian.

He was beheaded at Smyrna in 1772, about eighteen years of age.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Michael of Vourla is commemorated on April 16. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on April 29 of the civil calendar.
