Dormition of Anne

Dormition of Saint Anne, mother of the Theotokos.

On July 25 the Church commemorates the Dormition of St. Anna, the mother of the Most Holy Theotokos. With her husband, the righteous Joachim, she bore childlessness with patience and prayer until God granted them in old age the daughter who would become the Mother of God. According to tradition she reposed in peace in Jerusalem.

St. Anna is honored as the grandmother of Christ according to the flesh, and is invoked by mothers, by married couples, and by those praying to be granted children. The feast is the principal name day of those named Anna.

On the New Calendar, Dormition of Anne is commemorated on July 25. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on August 7 of the civil calendar.
