Eupraxia of Tabenna

Venerable Eupraxia the Elder of Tabenna in Egypt.

St. Eupraxia was a noblewoman of Constantinople in the fourth century, kinswoman of the Emperor Theodosius. Widowed, she withdrew with her young daughter to the Thebaid in Egypt and entered the monastic life at Tabenna, where she reposed in peace.

Her daughter, St. Eupraxia the Younger, is commemorated on July 25. The elder Eupraxia is commemorated on January 12.

July 25

St. Eupraxia was born to a noble family related to Emperor Theodosios the Great. As a child she entered a convent in the Thebaid of Egypt with her mother and, refusing the marriage arranged for her, remained there in great asceticism and humility.

Tradition relates that she was granted the gift of healing, and she reposed in the early fifth century.

On the New Calendar, Eupraxia of Tabenna is commemorated on January 12. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on January 25 of the civil calendar.
