  Dormition of Anne

  Holy Woman, Κοίμηση Αγίας Άννας

  On July 25 the Church commemorates the Dormition of St. Anna, the mother of the Most Holy Theotokos. With her husband, the righteous Joachim, she bore childlessness with patience and prayer until God granted them in old age the daughter who would become the Mother of God. According to tradition she reposed in peace in Jerusalem.

• Olympias the Deaconess

  Holy Woman, Ολυμπιάς η Διακόνισσα

  St. Olympias was a noblewoman of Constantinople who, widowed young, devoted her great wealth to the Church and the poor and was ordained a deaconess. She was a close friend and supporter of St. John Chrysostom, and shared his sufferings when he was exiled.

• Eupraxia of Tabenna

  Holy Woman, Ευπραξία

  St. Eupraxia was born to a noble family related to Emperor Theodosios the Great. As a child she entered a convent in the Thebaid of Egypt with her mother and, refusing the marriage arranged for her, remained there in great asceticism and humility.

• Fathers of the Fifth Ecumenical Council

  Saint, Πατέρες Ε' Οικουμενικής Συνόδου

  The Fifth Ecumenical Council met in Constantinople in 553 under Emperor Justinian and condemned the errors of Origen and the so-called Three Chapters, confirming the teaching of Chalcedon.

• Blandina and the Martyrs of Lyon

  Martyr, Βλανδίνα

  Sts. Sanctus, Maturus, Attalus and Blandina were among the Christians of Lyon in Gaul who suffered in the persecution of 177. Blandina, a slave girl, endured every torment with such courage that she strengthened all the others, and was the last to die.

• Gregory Kallidis

  Hierarch, Γρηγόριος Καλλίδης

  St. Gregory Kallidis was born in 1844 near Silivria and served as a hierarch of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, finally as Metropolitan of Heraclea in Thrace. He was known for his charity, his learning and his pastoral care.
