  Christina the Great Martyr

  Martyr, Χριστίνα Μεγαλομάρτυς

  St. Christina the Great Martyr suffered for Christ at Tyre in the third century. Born to a prominent pagan family and kept apart by her father, she came to knowledge of the one true God, and destroyed the idols of gold and silver set before her, giving the fragments to the poor. For this she endured imprisonment and cruel tortures at the hands of successive judges, remaining unshaken until she received the crown of martyrdom.

• Athenagoras the Apologist

  Saint, Αθηναγόρας

  St. Athenagoras was an Athenian philosopher of the second century who, tradition relates, came to faith in Christ while studying the Scriptures in order to refute them. He wrote a Plea for the Christians addressed to the emperor, defending the faith against slander, and a treatise on the resurrection.

  Sts. Boris and Gleb were sons of St. Vladimir of Kiev who, after their father's death in 1015, refused to raise arms against their elder brother Svyatopolk, though he sought their lives. They accepted death in the spirit of Christ rather than shed the blood of their kin.

• Theophilos of Zakynthos

  Martyr, Θεόφιλος ο εκ Ζακύνθου

  St. Theophilos was a sailor from Zakynthos who was falsely accused and pressured to embrace Islam. Tradition relates that he repented of a moment of weakness and boldly confessed Christ in Chios.

• Athanasios of Kios

  Martyr, Αθανάσιος ο εκ Κίου

  St. Athanasios was a young Christian from Kios in Bithynia who, tradition relates, was accused before the Ottoman authorities and refused to deny his faith.

• Kapiton, Hymenaios and Hermogenes

  Martyr, Καπίτων, Υμέναιος και Ερμογένης

  Sts. Kapiton, Hymenaios and Hermogenes are commemorated together as martyrs who confessed Christ during the persecutions of the early Church. Tradition relates that they died by the sword.
