Elias of Trebizond

New Martyr Elias of Trebizond, son of a priest, hanged for his faith.

St. Elias came from Kryoneri near Trebizond in Pontus and was the son of the priest Constantine. Seized by the Turks, he was tortured at the harbour of Trebizond and refused to deny Christ.

He was hanged in 1749, and the Christians buried his relics at the Monastery of Theoskepastos.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Elias of Trebizond is commemorated on February 27. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on March 12 (a day earlier in leap years) of the civil calendar.
