Ephraim of Antioch

Saint Ephraim, Patriarch of Antioch, defender of Chalcedon.

St. Ephraim was a civil governor of the East who, after helping to rebuild Antioch following a great earthquake, was chosen Patriarch of that city in the sixth century. He defended the doctrine of the Council of Chalcedon against the Monophysites and wrote many works in defense of the Orthodox faith.

Tradition relates that he once proved the truth of his confession by having his stole cast into a fire, from which it was drawn unharmed. He reposed in peace, and his memory is kept on March 7.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Ephraim of Antioch is commemorated on March 7. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on March 20 of the civil calendar.
