Paul the Simple

Venerable Paul the Simple, disciple of Saint Anthony the Great.

St. Paul the Simple was a farmer of Egypt in the fourth century who, at the age of sixty, left his unfaithful wife and went into the desert to become a disciple of St. Anthony the Great. Anthony tested his patience with many hard tasks, and Paul obeyed everything with such simplicity and humility that he soon received the gift of casting out demons.

Tradition relates that he could heal cases which even St. Anthony had not been able to cure. He reposed in peace, and his memory is kept on March 7.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Paul the Simple is commemorated on March 7. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on March 20 of the civil calendar.
