Euthymios of Trnovo

St. Euthymios, Patriarch of Trnovo, teacher of the Bulgarian people.

St. Euthymios was a disciple of St. Theodosios of Trnovo and lived for a time on Mount Athos before becoming Patriarch of Trnovo in 1375. A learned hesychast, he reformed the Slavonic liturgical books and strengthened his flock during the Ottoman conquest, after which he was exiled.

He reposed around 1402 and is commemorated on January 20.

On the New Calendar, Euthymios of Trnovo is commemorated on January 20. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on February 2 of the civil calendar.
