Leo the Great the Emperor

Holy Emperor Leo I the Great, called Makelles, of Thrace.

St. Leo I was Byzantine emperor from 457 to 474, a Thracian by birth. Tradition relates that he was granted a vision of the Theotokos at the spring outside Constantinople, where he built the church of the Life-Giving Spring; he was also a benefactor of the poor and of the Church.

He reposed in peace and is commemorated on January 20.

On the New Calendar, Leo the Great the Emperor is commemorated on January 20. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on February 2 of the civil calendar.
