Zacharias of Arta

New Martyr Zacharias of Arta, martyred at Patras.

St. Zacharias was a furrier from Arta who in his youth had embraced Islam. Repenting, he returned to Christ, went to Patras, and there openly confessed his faith before the judge; after torture he was put to death in 1782.

He is commemorated on January 20.

On the New Calendar, Zacharias of Arta is commemorated on January 20. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on February 2 of the civil calendar.
