Peter the Publican

Blessed Peter the Tax-Collector, who was converted through almsgiving.

St. Peter was a hard-hearted tax-collector in Africa in the sixth century who, tradition relates, once threw a loaf of bread at a beggar in anger and saw in a vision that even this was counted to him as alms. Converted, he gave all his goods to the poor and sold himself into slavery to serve the needy.

He reposed in peace and is commemorated on January 20.

On the New Calendar, Peter the Publican is commemorated on January 20. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on February 2 of the civil calendar.
