George of Ephesus

Holy New Martyr George of Ephesus, who suffered under Ottoman rule.

George was a Christian of Ephesus in Asia Minor who, in the years of Ottoman rule, was pressed to abandon his faith. Tradition relates that he confessed Christ firmly before the authorities and was put to death in his native region in the early nineteenth century.

He is one of the many new martyrs of Asia Minor honoured by the Greek Church.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, George of Ephesus is commemorated on April 5. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on April 18 of the civil calendar.
