George the Cypriot

Holy New Martyr George the Cypriot, martyred at Ptolemais.

George was a Cypriot who worked in Ptolemais in Palestine, where a false accusation was brought against him by the Turks. Urged to save himself by embracing Islam, he refused.

He was beheaded at Ptolemais in 1752 and is honoured among the new martyrs of Cyprus.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, George the Cypriot is commemorated on April 23. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on May 6 of the civil calendar.
